VAIKO! A Viking Taiko Project
In 2022 we worked with VESR, Heritage Lincolnshire & North East Lincolnshire Council to create and perform a Viking inspired Taiko drumming piece for the opening night of the very first 'Grim Falfest' event in Grimsby. A weekend festival celebrating the Viking heritage of NE Lincs.
We wrote the piece 'Grim' inspired by Viking runes and the history of Grimsby. Our Humber Taiko collective, featuring drummers from all across our different groups as well as some of our professional team, premiered the piece at the festival alongside a full performance to a packed crowd just before the Viking longboat appeared at the Dock!
In 2023 we were commissioned to create another new piece and teach it through a series of summer workshops, leading up to the performance for the second Grim Falfest event.
The second piece was 'Legend', written by Emma Lawn and again inspired by the legend of Grim & Havelock - the tragedy, the journey and the arrival on our shores. Featuring Nordic inspired rhythms, the piece was created to be powerful and yet accessible for new players to learn and perform.
Legend has become a staple in our general repertoire with all of our taiko players wanting to learn it and perform it. Shortly after the Grim Falfest event in 2023 we featured both VAIKO pieces at our Humber Taiko Festival at the Grimsby Central Hall to open the show.
We are keen to look at a third and final piece to complete our VAIKO Trilogy of Viking inspired Taiko pieces - watch this space!
