Humber Taiko is a project focused on the development & promotion of Japanese style 'Taiko' ensemble drumming across the Humber region and beyond. Led by a combination of community players, school leaders, parents & professional Taiko artists, Humber Taiko brings a range of Taiko projects to schools & communities as well as delivering events & the regular Humber Taiko Festival.

Rhythms of the Sea - BOOK HERE!
Humber Taiko leads on this exploration of music and it’s relationship with the sea - from Japanese rhythms to traditional folk songs, including exciting visual arts opportunities! Upcoming workshops: Drum & Voice - Saturday 14th September (FREE) 1pm-3pm at Our Big Picture Learn a new fishing inspired song and experiment with drumming & rhythms in this explorative workshop led by Folk Musicians & Taiko Drummers. Open to the community, including families! No experience needed, come along and join in. Rhythms of the Sea Symposium: An audience with PJ Hirabayashi - Saturday 28th September (FREE) 1pm-4pm at Our Big Picture Join us to hear from renowned Taiko artist PJ Hirabayashi and how she created 'Ei Ja Nai Ka', the inspiration for our 'Follow The Fishing' piece locally. Other guests to be announced as well as opportunities to get involved in more fish art and learn the new song from Lisa Oliver! Previous workshops Koinobori Workshop - Monday 19th August (FREE) Drop in between 1pm-4pm at Our Big Picture, Bethlehem Street, Grimsby Koinobori meaning 'carp streamer' in Japanese, are carp-shaped windsocks traditionally made by drawing carp patterns on paper or fabric. Gyotaku Workshop - Tuesday 20th August (FREE) Drop in between 1pm-4pm at Our Big Picture, Bethlehem Street, Grimsby Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese method of printing fish, it was used by fishermen from the 1800s to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own. (please note that real fish will be used in this workshop alongside some fake alternatives) Taiko Intro & Follow The Fishing - Sunday 1st September (FREE) 10am-12pm at Grimsby Central Hall. Come along and drum together - this introduction to Taiko drumming using our piece, Follow The Fishing, is suitable for experienced players as well as complete beginners. This is a 2 hour Taiko drumming session at Grimsby Central Hall, 10am-12pm, FREE! Open to adults and ages 7+. Part of our Rhythms of the Sea project! We will be going through some basic techniques before launching into the piece itself which includes drumming, percussion, other instrumentals, movement and chanting. Learn Miyake - Sunday 1st September (FREE) 1pm-2.30pm at Grimsby Central Hall Come along and drum together - this is an introduction to the traditional taiko piece, Miyake. Suitable for beginners but some experience in Taiko drumming is beneficial. This is a 90 min Taiko drumming session at Grimsby Central Hall, 1pm-2.30pm, FREE! Open to adults and ages 11+. We will be going through some basic techniques before launching into the piece itself which uses a side drumming technique.
