Follow the Fishing
'Follow the Fishing' is a brand new community led Taiko project with Gyoko Taiko. The whole project was inspired by Ei Ja Nai Ka written by PJ Hirabayashi and San Jose Taiko.
The idea was to create a piece of Taiko to represent and celebrate the heritage, community and future of North East Lincolnshire using Taiko drumming, Obon style dancing as well as voice and additional instrumental parts which people of all ages and abilities to join in with at events and festivals.
We worked with Hannah-Jasmine Brunskill of Taiko Journey, who had been teaching Ei Ja Nai Ka across the UK for PJ Hirabayashi, to bring members of the community together and write the piece. The first phase of the project has consisted of research into the local area, exploration of ideas with different groups of people, choreography and composition sessions and teaching in schools. At this point over 1000 people have participated so far including 6 local schools.
The title 'Follow the Fishing' refers back to the fishing hertiage of North East Lincolnshire as well as forwards in terms of 'What comes next?'.
It was clear that for the people involved in it's creation, local identity was important as was breaking through negative stereotypes and a need to celebrate and feel proud of their area and community.
The project is being documented through a series of mini films which will be available soon.
'Follow the Fishing' has been funded by the Walwyn Chapman Charitable Trust, Freshney Ward Community First and the Community Development Foundation.
The project has been support by the North East Lincolnshire Music Education Hub, Serco Education and John Whitgift Academy.
