Thursday 21st November 7pm at the Cleethorpes Parkway Cinema We welcomed international Taiko guests to the Humber Taiko Festival 2019! IWATO is a Contemporary piece using traditional Japanese arts techniques: Nihon-Buyô (classical dance by Yûkô Fujima) and Taiko (traditional drums by Nori Kajio ). Iwato is inspired by the legend of Amaterasu, goddess of the sun who locks herself in a cave plunging the whole world into darkness! The evening also featured guest performances from local professional group Coritani, and Grimsby’s award winning youth group Gyoko Youth Taiko. TAIKO NIGHT
Saturday 23rd November 7pm at The Grimsby Auditorium Humber Taiko presented the annual celebration of Taiko featuring local youth and community groups from across Northern Lincolnshire, and international guests. Previously held in Scunthorpe, the Humber Taiko Festival finally arrived in North East Lincs!! This widely anticipated event gets bigger and better every year. |
WorkshopsTaiko Set Playing
Friday 22nd November, 6pm-8pm at the Music & Performing Arts Service (John Whitgift Academy, Grimsby, DN37 9EH) With Martin Doyle of Tsuchigumo Daiko. This workshop focused on a kit style multi-drum setup, and how to move and play in a relaxed and effective way across two or more sources. Exercises to develop general playing technique, and teach you how to perform smooth transitions between drums whilst leading from either side. This workshop also covered ideas on orchestration, use of textures, and showmanship to help you create that killer drum solo! Taiko with Slanting Stand Saturday 23rd November, 10.30am-12pm or 1pm-2.30pm at the Grimsby Auditorium (Cromwell Road, Grimsby, DN31 2BH) With Nori Kajio. A Taiko workshop with slanting stand. Participants learned the basic skills of taiko including rhythm; posture; and technique. During the session, we focused on "bondaiko" rhythm (style linked to Japanese folklore and dance) which includes a solo performance. Moving from the Core Saturday 23rd November, 10.30am-12pm or 1pm-2.30pm at the Grimsby Auditorium (Cromwell Road, Grimsby, DN31 2BH) With Isabel Romeo Biedma. The purpose of this workshop is to get connected with our body and its core. This Taiko session is a physical one and we will connect with how we move through different patterns, then adding rhythm. In the workshop we'll use a tenugui (a light piece of cotton fabric). These will be provided but if participants want to bring something similar to use of their own they are welcome to. Big Bash - Drum for Fun! Sunday 24th November, 10am-12pm at the Music & Performing Arts Service (John Whitgift Academy, Grimsby, DN37 9EH) With Amy Naylor of Humber Taiko & Isabel Romeo Biedma. A fun community taiko workshop - We learnt the basics and put together a short Taiko piece. Whether you have never played Taiko before or if you have been playing for years, this was just an opportunity to drum with others without any pressure. |
